Sarah Goff is a photographer from who specializes in macro photography. She mostly uses water as her main subject, photographing the things from nature such as leaves, flower petals and water droplets.
The image was taken in an exterior location, as seen through the use of the sky and the sunlight. The use of being outside makes this photo work well because the yellow of the rose contrast with the blue of the sky. It wouldn't have worked well in the studio because you wouldn't have got that contrast unless you used a backdrop which wouldn't have the same effect. The rose in central, which suggests that the photographer wanted the rose to be the first thing that you see. There doesn't seem to be any use of a flash as, combined with the natural light, would have made the image far too bright, the light from the sun looked to be sufficient enough to light the photo. The shutter speed might have been somewhere around 2/100 as there is no moving objects or motion blurring. The ISO might have been around 200-400 as, the same as the flash, anything higher than that would have made the image far too bright. There is a deep depth of field as both the main subject of the image in the foreground and the background are both in focus. I think that the photographer is trying to communicate the contrast between the blue and the yellow, blue being a 'cold' colour and yellow being a 'warm' colour, this shows that the photographer's choice of a yellow rose against a blue sky was not accidental. I like this image, I really like how the rose is the first thing your eyes see and then your eyes kind of wander to take in the background of the image. I will use this image to influence my own work because I will take photos of flower petals in close up, hopefully flowers that use complimentary or contrasting colors.
